Follows description from Equipboard:

The Boss LM-2 Limiter is an analog dynamic effect pedal manufactured in Japan between 1987 and 1992. Unlike a standard compressor that "squashes" the entire signal, the LM-2 is designed specifically to suppress high-volume peaks while preserving the rest of your signal’s natural dynamic range.

Key Functions and Performance

  • Purpose: It balances volume differences between single notes and chords, prevents unwanted spikes in live or studio settings, and provides a more transparent sound than most compressors.
  • Circuitry: It uses a high-quality Voltage-Controlled Amplifier (VCA) and high-speed envelope detection for a natural effect with low noise and minimal tone loss.
  • Instrument Versatility: While originally targeted at guitarists for smoothing solos, it became a favorite among bassists for leveling "slap" playing, leading Boss to eventually rebrand subsequent models as "Bass Limiters".

Control Interface

The pedal features four primary knobs to shape the effect:

  • Level: Sets the overall output volume.
  • Tone: Adjusts the EQ; clockwise enhances high-end frequencies ("sharper" sound), while counterclockwise cuts them ("softer" sound).
  • Release: Determines how quickly the limiter stops affecting the signal after a peak, helping to avoid "pumping" and manage sustain.
  • Threshold: Sets the volume level where limiting begins. Turning it counterclockwise lowers the threshold, increasing the overall limiting effect.

Specifications

  • Build: Durable metal casing with a blue finish.
  • Power: Requires a 9V battery or a Boss ACA-series AC adapter.
  • Weight: Approximately 400g (0.88 lbs).
  • Dimensions: 70(W) x 55(H) x 125(D) mm.
