The “Pre-Historic 57 Les Paul Custom” has arrived.

We have received a special model from the early days of the Custom Shop, which served as the precursor to the Historic Collection.

In the 1980s, as demand for vintage-style instruments grew, several dealers began placing orders with Gibson for high-end reissue models to meet their customers’ desires.

In 1991, the “Gibson Custom Shop” was established by the founders of the Historic Collection—including Tom Murphy and Edwin Wilson—to handle such custom orders.

Initially, the shop produced custom-spec instruments based on dealer orders, but among these, the rare reissue models that faithfully replicated vintage styles came to be known as the “Pre-Historic” series—the prototype for the Historic Collection that emerged later and continues to this day.

-Born in the midst of such a turbulent era, this 1957 Les Paul Custom “Black Beauty”—representing the final phase of the “Pre-Historic” era—was crafted by a skilled master luthier who prioritized finish quality over efficiency. The passion poured into each instrument can still be felt when you hold it in your hands today.

The “Historic Collection,” established in 1993, has undergone annual upgrades to this day and has recently achieved a level of craftsmanship that rivals vintage models. Yet, this particular guitar does not fade into the background even when compared to the latest models; it strongly captivates the player’s heart.

The wood used is high-grade material, which was more abundant at the time than it is today. It features an all-mahogany body with a arched top—a specification not listed in the catalog—a mahogany neck, and a slab ebony fingerboard with a truly beautiful luster. The body, neck, and fingerboard are all made from carefully selected, top-quality materials.

The finish is thin and understated overall, allowing the high-grade wood to resonate directly. This produces a dry, acoustic-like resonance, with each note responding instantly to the pick and delivering a sound of immeasurable depth.

It is equipped with the “57 Classic,” a PAF clone designed by Tom Holmes.

While characterized by a vintage-flavored tone that blends with the body’s mature resonance, it remains clear and lustrous. Moreover, its presence—manifested in the sound pressure of the drive tone and the sustain rich with harmonics—is unmatched.

Although these are Gibson’s best-selling pickups, it’s easy to see why the early models are particularly highly regarded—the tone possesses a genuine, compelling quality.

One cannot help but anticipate the moment when this instrument, born 30 years ago from the efforts of those who yearned for vintage sounds, will truly become vintage itself after 40 or 50 years have passed.

This is a guitar that makes you feel exactly that.

- Condition

While there are minor and major scratches and dents throughout, and the hardware shows some tarnish, it remains in good condition considering its age. The volume pot shows signs of age, and there is some veneer lifting near the truss rod cavity, in the area hidden by the rod cover.

The frets have been carefully dressed, and with about 60% of the original material remaining, it plays very comfortably.

The neck is in good condition, and the truss rod functions properly.

With its relatively light weight and excellent balance, you can enjoy superb sound without any strain.
