1U rackmount unit that combines vintage-style optical (opto/Vactrol) compression with a tube makeup gain stage for added warmth and harmonic character. It was praised for delivering smooth, professional-sounding compression at a budget-friendly price (originally around $700 street), often compared to higher-end “kilo-buck” units.

Key Features

•  Two-channel design with stereo link capability (for linked stereo operation; channels share control signals when linked, though some users note it requires manual matching or mods for perfect dual-knob control).

•  Vactrol optical electronics (using Perkin Elmer VTL5C2 LED/LDR elements in a feedback design) for smooth, natural, silky attack and release—classic opto-style glue and leveling.

•  Hand-selected 12AX7 vacuum tube (one shared for both channels) in the makeup gain stage, with a “Drive” control to dial in tube overdrive/harmonic distortion for color and warmth.

•  Controls:

•  Five-position attack/release selector (simplified but versatile; capable of fast attacks for punchy “VCA-style thwack” despite being opto-based).

•  Two-position ratio switch (2:1 and 4:1).

•  Output level control.

•  High-pass filter (HPF) switch on the sidechain (6dB/octave roll-off, 3dB down at 90Hz) to reduce low-end pumping.
