I bought this guitar stock and did a considerable amount of work to it, in order to make it a very good instrument for jazz and fingerstyle:

  • Gotoh Tuners are big improvement over stock - they operate so smoothly
  • GraphTech Bridge brought out a more articulate tone as well as improving intonation
  • Kent Armstrong RagTop P90 neck pick-up really nails that 50's tone
  • Pure Tone jack - resulted in an unbelievable improvement in the tone of the P90 - volume wise and brought an enhanced low end

In addition to the above, the fret ends were all filed and buffed smoothly. The pearl-like inlays were almost all popping up and needed to be reglued and finish sanded. The fret board has been conditioned. And finally, the guitar is set-up for Chrome 10's and plays great with an action that is 1.75/1.5 low E to high E respectively. The guitar comes from an era when Ibanez was using one piece mahogany construction for the neck and maple laminate for the body. And, rosewood fretboards. Today the AG75 is made with all kind of alternative substitutes for what was widely considered a great combination for guitar (i.e. mahogany /maple laminate). The dimension of the guitar is perfectly suited to someone who doesn't want to wrestle with large archtops. I've owned several very high end archtops that were sold because they were big and uncomfortable to play. This AG75 is very comfortable ergonomically.

These guitars are really fantastic instruments as a starting point. But, even a modestly experienced guitarist will likely want upgrades from stock. My changes are my interpretation of taking the instrument from not bad to very good. Pair this guitar with a Roland Cube amp set to JC Clean and you will lack absolutely nothing as far as jazz tone is considered.

Condition notes: the odd ding and doink here and there, but nothing terrifyingly obvious. It's been played. The P90 was installed using compact solderless electrical connectors. I did this to allow for future flexibility in the event another pickup was desired. I like the system because it works, and now becomes an easy switch to a humbucker or whatever else. But, for me the Armstrong RagTop is the perfect fit for this guitar, and I personally wouldn't change it unless I was very bored. Also, I have the original pickguard and bridge.
