The Akai GX-635D is a stellar, vintage 4-track, 2-channel stereo reel-to-reel tape deck manufactured in Japan between 1979 and 1981. It was part of Akai's high-end open-reel series and is best known for its durable GX (Glass & Crystal Ferrite) heads, which are virtually wear-proof. The heads on this unit are in excellent shape, as is the rest of the reel machine, inside and out, which also grades at Excellent.

  • Motors: 3-motor system (1 x AC servo capstan drive, 2 x AC eddy current reel drives)
  • Reel Size: Supports up to 10.5-inch reels
  • Tape Speeds: 7 ½ ips (19 cm/s) and 3 ¾ ips (9.5 cm/s) with a ±6% pitch control
  • Frequency Response: 30Hz to 27kHz at 7 ½ ips (±3dB using WR tape)
  • Dimensions & Weight: 20" x 18" x 9"; weighs 46.4 lbs

Service History: No service records were included from the prior owner. Here at the shop we did routine testing, cleaning and inspection.
