1998 Gibson Custom Shop ES-336 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar - Very Good Condition

Up for grabs is this rare 1998ish Gibson Custom Shop ES-336, a short-lived gem from Gibson's Custom Collection produced only between 1996 and 1998. This model was Gibson's innovative take on shrinking down the iconic ES-335 into a more compact, Les Paul-sized body while retaining that classic semi-hollow vibe. It's not to be confused with the later CS-336— this one sports a unique headstock design and was crafted during a brief experimental phase in Gibson's history. If you're after a versatile axe that bridges the warm resonance of a hollowbody with the focused punch of a solidbody, this is it. Perfect for jazz, blues, rock, or anything in between, with tons of tonal flexibility.

Construction-wise, it features a tonally carved mahogany back that's routed out for the semi-hollow chambers, topped with a figured maple cap for that signature Gibson snap and sustain. The hand-scalloped bracing inside enhances resonance, giving you rich, balanced tones without the feedback issues of full hollowbodies. It's equipped with a pair of '57 Classic humbuckers that deliver vintage-inspired warmth—creamy cleans, gritty overdrive, and everything from sweet neck-position jazz to biting bridge leads. The mahogany set-neck has a comfortable medium profile, paired with a rosewood fretboard, 22 frets, and a 24.75" scale for effortless playability. Hardware includes an ABR-1 bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and Schaller tuners, all in nickel for that classic look.

This particular example is in very good condition overall, showing only light player wear consistent with its age—no major dings, cracks, or structural issues. Light checkering on the body and headstock. Some worming on the back of the body with minimal bucklerash. Some pick swirling on the pickguard. The frets have plenty of life left, the electronics are clean and functional, and it sets up beautifully with low action. The finish, pretty sure it's an Ice Tea Burst, has aged gracefully with some minor checking and subtle patina that adds character without detracting from its appeal. She could use a professional polish, as there are some blemishes, but they would likely buff out with the right tools and expertise. It comes with the original hardshell case for safe transport. The case is a little ugly on the outside, but it is structurally sound and performs as designed.

Whether you're a collector hunting rare Gibson oddities or a player seeking a unique semi-hollow that's lighter and more maneuverable than a standard 335, this ES-336 won't disappoint. Plug it in, and you'll hear why these are cult favorites among those in the know.
