The Fender "Lap Steel" was developed and sold by Leo Fender, a musical instrument that laid the foundation for the development of the electric guitar. Leo Fender had been running Fender's Radio Service since 1938, repairing radios, a long-standing interest of his. He began receiving requests for repairs on lap steel guitars, which were popular at the time. He met Doc Kauffman, who would have a major impact on his life. He told Kauffman about Leo's ideas, and after a successful collaboration, they founded K&F Manufacturing Corp. in 1945. K&F manufactured and sold the lap steel guitars and amplifiers developed by Leo. Doc left the company the following year, and in 1947 the company changed its name to Fender Electric Instrument Company, marking the birth of the future Fender brand. This instrument is a student model of one of Fender's early lap steel guitars, the Champion Lap Steel. Production began around 1949 and continued through 1956. This vintage instrument is believed to have been made around 1953-54. It features a yellow pearloid-wrapped body, single-coil pickups with pole pieces for each of the six strings, a head metal plate stamped with "Fender Electric Instrument Co." (the company's name at the time), three no-line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines, and a bridge plate with a serial number stamp. Two replacement pots and capacitors have been installed, as have the tuning machine knobs. The finish is in excellent condition, with minimal damage. As the name suggests, a lap steel guitar is played by placing it on the "lap" (the upper thighs when seated). Incidentally, guitars played upright were called Spanish guitars. Lap steels are still popular in country and Hawaiian music, and are also widely used in rock and blues. The controls are one volume and one tone. It is currently set up with strings for C6 tuning. This historic Fender "Lap Steel" guitar shows many of the characteristics that would later develop into the Broadcaster. Be sure to add it to your collection.
