The Vertex Steel String Clean Drive (MKII) is an analog pedal designed to replicate the "D-style" tone, touch-sensitivity, and warmth of a 6L6-powered Dumble Steel String Singer amplifier. It acts as a versatile clean boost, compressor, and overdrive with a 33% smaller footprint than the original, featuring Gain, Level, Filter, and a Jazz/Rock toggle for EQ shaping.
Key Features and Specs
- Tone: Modeled after the Dumble Steel String Singer (SN 001) for clean, fat, and warm tones, often used for "Texas Flood" or John Mayer-style sounds.
- Controls: Volume, Gain, Filter, and a Jazz/Rock switch.
- MKII Improvements: 33% smaller footprint, added Jazz/Rock toggle for low-end control (Jazz cuts ~80dB of bass, Rock is standard), and improved headroom.
- Operation: True Bypass, 9-18V DC center-negative power, <10mA current draw.
- Build: Rugged brushed metal housing, designed and assembled in California.
The pedal is known for adding a compressed, slightly gritty, or "fat" character to clean amps. It works well as a "clean drive" that can provide grit without fully distorting, though it can achieve higher-gain sounds when pushed.
