1956 Model / J-200
“This is the King of Flat-Tops”
The SJ-200/J-200 reigns supreme as Gibson's top-tier acoustic model. Its 17-inch body width and long scale produce a truly unique sound. This powerful tone, combining boldness and brilliance, has been cherished by countless musicians, including Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Keith Richards. Let's explore the appeal of this instrument!
- The floral carving on the reddish pickguard
Starting in 1955, the tortoiseshell pickguard, which had previously been more brown, changed specifications to a pickguard with a stronger reddish hue. This instrument also reflects this specification change, beautifully showcasing the flower carving that is a hallmark of the SJ-200/J-200. The carved lines are colored yellow, and all 12 dots are also colored yellow.
The top of this Super Jumbo body, befitting a flagship model, features spruce with a fine, distinctive grain pattern. The body is finished in a brown sunburst. Scratch marks from picks around the soundhole reveal the instrument's history of playing countless songs. The double ring is used for the purfling.
The sides and back feature beautiful figured maple, revealing different expressions depending on the viewing angle. Black is applied to the neck heel and the tapered sides, while the body back features a burst finish designed to lighten towards the center. The back strip employs Pattern B, used from 1940 to 1958.
The fingerboard is crafted from rosewood, with crown inlays enhancing its luxurious appearance. The inlay design changes as it moves toward the higher positions, creating an enjoyable visual progression.
The neck features beautiful figured maple, with a burst finish applied from the neck heel to the first fret and from the ninth fret to the neck heel. The finish likely enhances the visual appeal by preserving the beautiful grain pattern. The neck shape offers a comfortably thick grip that fits well in the hand.
One of the SJ-200/J-200's defining features, the Moustache Bridge, is crafted from rosewood. Mother-of-pearl square inlays are placed at four locations: two beneath the saddle and two beneath the bridge pins. Additionally, this instrument features an inlay made of abalone shell added between the third and fourth string bridge pins on the triple moustache bridge. This appears to have been added during a repair.
The large-sized headstock features binding, along with Gibson's modern logo and a crown inlay signifying a higher-end model. Additionally, the bell-shaped truss rod cover features a thick white border. The truss rod cover is positioned low, near the nut.
The tuning machines have been replaced with KLUSON DELUXE units, but the choice of gold hardware with keystone pegs—closely resembling the KLUSON Single-Line style adopted around 1951—reveals the thoughtful consideration of an owner who cherishes the J-200.
How about it? “Want to produce powerful tones?” “Looking for a great guitar?” We invite you to try this instrument that fulfills such desires! Every strum will undoubtedly let you feel the joy of playing and discover the hidden charm within this instrument.
