(2) Handmade African  Tonga Tribe Log Drums from Zambia (1) Handmade African  gourd  shaker  (1) Handmade African basket-like shaker with metal rattles (4 items total for sale in this listing). 

All were purchased in the early in the 1990s from the central part of Arica.  They have imperfections, but are in fair to good condition, and is well used. These instruments often hold a symbolic or spiritual meaning in many African traditions. Instruments such as these were (and still are) used in storytelling, ceremonies, and entertainment, playing an important role in preserving oral traditions.

1. First item: Handmade African  Tonga Tribe Log Drum from Zambia 

This is a African Tonga Tribe Log Drum from Zambia.  It was purchased in the central part of Africa in the mid 1990s.  we don't have a history of where or when it was made.  The drum is completely made out of a log, hollowed out in the center with animal hide over the top. It measure approximately 12' wide and 20" high. We have done our best to photograph the all aspects of this drum in our photos. 2. Second Item : Handmade African  Tonga Tribe Log Drum from Zambia 

This is a handmade African Tonga "Tribe" Drum from Zambia.  It was purchased in the central part of Africa in the mid 1990s.  we don't have a history of where or when it was made.  The drum is completely made out of a log, hollowed out in the center with animal hide over the top. It measure approximately 12' wide at its widest point and is 18 inches high. . We have done our best to photograph the all aspects of this drum in our photos. Third Item Handmade African  gourd  shaker - handwoven from reeds/wood  with large seeds or other organic rattles.The African  gourd -like shaker, was purchased in the central part of Africa in the mid 1990s.  Sorry, we don't have a history of where or when it was made.  The elements used to make the shaking sound inside are probably seed or other type of organic material.  Please see all photos and video of this item and look at the carefully. before purchasing  we have done our best to accurately document the look and nature of this instrument.

  • Background and info on Gourd shakers from Africa: The shaker is one of the most widely recognized African gourd shakers, particularly in West Africa where it originated. 
  • Construction: It is made from a dried, hollowed-out gourd (calabash) covered with a woven netting of beads, cowrie shells, or seeds. In Ghana, where it is called an axatse, it is often covered with Job's Tear seeds.
  • Appearance: Shakers vary in size and shape depending on the type of gourd used, from small instruments to much larger versions.
  • Sound and play: The instrument produces a dynamic range of sounds based on how it's played. Performers can:
  • Shake the instrument for a continuous rattling sound.
  • Cultural significance: The shaker is used in folkloric traditions, dance rituals, and popular music styles in Africa and Latin America, where enslaved Africans brought the tradition. 

4, Fourth Item:  Handmade African basket-like shaker with metal rattles.

  • This is a basket type shaker from Africa.  It was purchased in the central part of Africa in the mid 1990s.  we don't have a history of where or when it was made.  The elements used to make the shaking sound inside of the 2 baskets are acorn size metal pieces.
