I have received some information from a great Reverber on here. Just proves we have a cool community here.
He has one of these too - it's called a National Princess and is from circa 1941-42. "We" know of about three other of these guitars (including his) - his is all original apart from a missing scratchplate but otherwise decent cosmetic condition. Another is missing a few things but still together. The third one is on display, in the Ohio Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, as it supposedly belonged the great blues singer / slide guitarist, Elmore James (although there is no known pictures of him with the guitar).
I'm not sure if the scratchplate on yours is original but it certainly looks a vintage replacement IF it's not the original. Original Vol, Tone knobs. These are definitely period National knobs. The metal bridge is Teisco/Kawai from the circa 1960's. The hole in the bass side, is where the guitar cable originally came out of, hardwired to the guitar - you just pushed the cable back in side when not plugged into an amp. A previous owner has put a hole in the treble side for a new jack socket.
I’ve had it for a while, before I got it I did have a neck reset years and years ago. It has been done very well, so that the guitar place wonderfully, but cosmetically it wasn’t the greatest repair even though it is smooth, you can see from the pictures.
The pick up is wonderful. It sounds big. It sounds good, there was a hole drilled on the opposing side, maybe it was for another output jack or something over the years, I cannot figure it out.
You can see from the old sticker on the back of the head stock that this was at a guitar show at some point being sold in 1992 which I think it’s pretty cool that it’s still there.
The tuners look to be from a vintage, silver tone arch top, these are not what would be original to the national, it had steel buttons, where is this has plastic buttons. They do function well.
The guitar is set up and strung with 11 to 49
The guitar includes a nice hard shell case that would probably be around 50 years old or so.
Like I said, it was difficult to find any information on this model. It has a lot of similarities to some of the New Yorkers. But it does have f holes and set up a solid top, but the pick up and the placement and the knobs are similar to a New Yorker. The inlay has big blocks like a New Yorker but it does not have dots post the 12th fret, which is what a New Yorker has.
Any information to help me would be cool. I do like the instrument, it is nice, so hopefully you can find a good home as I am not playing the Jazz boxes much anymore.
