Here we have a very fine and extremely rare 1957 Gibson ES-125-D archtop. The guitar is out of a collector's smoke free temperature controlled luthiers estate who is retiring. Well cared for and lightly played, this guitar is fully original except for the tailpiece which looks like an period correct ES-175 tailpiece and the machine heads which have the proper footprint into the headstock but has Tulip style tips which would not are not original. Both these minor changes are also noted in George Gruhn's included appraisal sheet.
The frets and fretboard have been cleaned and show only the very slightest wear in the first few frets. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard has been seasoned and the guitar all set up with fresh Ernie Ball .11-.50 strings and is ready to play. The guitar plays with ease and the notes ring thru nice and clear all up the board.
Cosmetically they do not come much better than this with only a few blemishes, light honest wear, and aging from being almost 70 year s old. the machine heads work real well and keep it in tune. The worst blemish is pictured where there was a strap pin taken out. It is a little messy there but could be easily touched up which is a service we can provide if you do not have your own luthier.
Nut is 1 11/16" wide.
Serial# U-3738 22

NOTE: Too cool. We just shipped very recently this summer a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!
Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!
We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
