1987 Gibson Les Paul Custom Alpine White w/Case
Up for grabs is quite possibly the finest example of a Gibson Les Paul Custom we’ve had through the doors here at IBG.
Built in 1987, this one showcases that perfectly aged patina we’re all chasing. The original Alpine White finish has gracefully mellowed into a rich, smoky “buttercream,” while the nitrocellulose lacquer displays beautifully natural checking throughout — nothing artificial, just decades of honest ageing. Add to that the perfectly tarnished gold hardware and you’ve got one seriously special Custom. So why buy a “new” relic when you can have the real thing — without paying the wild prices those imitations command? Makes sense, right?
Constructed from classic tone-woods, it features a solid mahogany body with a carved maple top, a one-piece mahogany neck, and an ebony fretboard, coming in at a 9lbs 13oz.
Included with the guitar are the original warranty card and a ’90s Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul hard case.
Modifications to note:
The guitar has had a professionally executed re-fret (all the better for it), along with a new 1 11/16” nut. The bridge pickup has been swapped for an ’80s Seymour Duncan APH-1BJ Alnico Pro humbucker. Judging by the solder joints, this modification was carried out a long time ago. Given how incredible it sounds, we chose to leave it as is rather than source a period-correct Tim Shaw humbucker. Aside from this, the rest of the guitar remains original.
Condition:
The guitar is in excellent condition, free from any breaks or repairs, and is fully functional throughout. It’s clearly been loved and well cared for by its one owner.
Cosmetically, there is lacquer crazing and discolouration of the finish throughout, as well as some in wear in the to-be-expected areas, but this only adds to this guitar's stunning aesthetic.
The ’60s slim-profile neck feels fantastic in the hand, with some light wear that only adds to the character. The replacement nut has been expertly cut for optimal playability. All 22 medium jumbo frets are in great shape with plenty of life remaining. The original electronics and gold hardware function exactly as they should.
Tonally, the Tim Shaw neck pickup and Seymour Duncan bridge pickup complement each other beautifully — resulting in a truly stunning-sounding Les Paul.
