Up for sale, a 1960 Epiphone Century E-422T in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. As a USA-made Epiphone model produced under Gibson ownership at the same Kalamazoo, MI factory that crafted all of Gibson's instruments in the '60s, this E-422T Century has the same tonewoods, electronics, and hardware as a Gibson ES-125T.
Distinctive and highly desirable Epiphone cosmetics include the metal "bikini" headstock plaque, white P-90 cover, and "E" epsilon on the raised tortoise pickguard. This vintage thinline archtop makes the most of its fully hollow maple construction, offering a big, clear sound and smooth bark that translates well through the centrally located pickup. The P-90 is wound nice and hot at 8.6k ohms, delivering a rich percussive chop when chording. Warm and sweet, the pickup is responsive to pick attack with punchy trebles and a textured growl when digging in hard. The Century is featherweight at 5lbs 7oz, professionally setup with 12-52 flatwound strings, easy-playing action and accurate intonation.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with round shoulders in every register, measuring .800" deep at the 1st fret and .860" at the 9th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard sports pearl dot inlay, and the original medium jumbo fretwire has been leveled and crowned, currently showing no wear with plenty of meat left. The guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale length, and the neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original nylon nut measures 1 11/16” width. On the headstock, the guitar features the original set of Kluson Deluxe single line strip tuners with uniform patina on the nickel plating and white plastic buttons. The original metal Epiphone "bikini" badge is also present and very clean.
On the body, the guitar features stock electronics with an untouched wiring harness including original pots and a paper-in-oil tone cap. Hardware includes the Brazilian rosewood bridge with compensated saddle and clean, nickel-plated trapeze tailpiece. All of the stock plastics are intact, with gold reflector cap knobs, a white P-90 cover, and single-ply translucent tortoise pickguard complete with foil "E" epsilon. The blue rectangular label is visible through the F hole, stamped with the A prefix serial number.
This three-tone Sunburst gloss finish is vibrant on top, with a darker walnut back and rims, showing vertical lacquer checking across the instrument as a whole and highlighting subtle quilt figuring on the top on the bass-side lower bout. Cosmetic wear includes buckle rash on the back, and a handful of minor nicks and finish scratches on the body as a whole, largely concentrated on the back and lower bout edge. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, with just one shallow scuff on the bass-side shoulder behind fret 6.
A modern TKL black tolex hardshell case with red plush interior is included. The case has a Gretsch badge on the exterior, and all but one of the latches are functional.
