About Greg Black Mouthpieces

Greg Black has been making mouthpieces since 1985, carrying on the traditions of the great New York City mouthpiece makers. Today he and partner Benjamin Strickland run the shop in Mount Holly, North Carolina, where every mouthpiece is handmade. You'll find Greg Black mouthpieces in orchestras, Broadway pits, recording studios, and schools around the world.

The Jim Nova Artist Series

Greg has worked with Jim Nova of the Pittsburgh Symphony since 2002, building custom pieces to meet the demands of Jim's career as a doubler. The resulting series covers the whole trombone family from soprano to contrabass, all built around a 3G rim.

You can hear Jim and some of his incredible work with the Pittsburgh Symphony or on his webpage as well as on SoundCloud.

1.7 Symphony Tenor Trombone Specs
  • Rim: 3G
  • Cup depth: Medium deep
  • Bore: .281"
  • Weight: Regular. Heavier mouthpieces slot more firmly, while lighter ones give you more flexibility in slotting and dynamic control. Light is a great all-around choice, and heavier weights tend to be preferred for orchestral work or the extremes of very soft and very loud playing.

Please Note:
Alternative shanks and weights are not available.
