Follows description from Equipboard:

The BOSS DSD-2 Digital Sampler/Delay is a vintage compact effects pedal, produced between 1985 and 1986, that combines a digital delay line with an early, basic audio sampler. It uses the same 12-bit delay engine chip as the famous BOSS DD-2 pedal, providing crisp, clear digital delay tones.

Key Features and Functionality

  • Dual Functionality: The pedal offers both a digital delay effect and a sampling function, which was a revolutionary feature for a compact pedal at the time.
  • Delay Modes: The delay section has two modes, Short (S) and Long (L), with a total delay time range from 50 milliseconds up to a maximum of 800 milliseconds.
  • Sampling Capability: The sampler allows users to record short audio phrases, up to 800 milliseconds (0.8 seconds) in length. This function can be used to create drone sounds or short loops to play over.
  • Controls: The pedal features standard controls for Effect Level, Feedback, and Time, along with a Mode selector switch to choose between the various delay and sampler modes (S Delay, L Delay, Sample Record, Sample Play).
  • Trigger Input: A dedicated 1/4" Trigger In jack allows for external synchronization of the sample playback with a drum machine or other source, enabling rhythmic effects.
  • Power: The unit operates on a 9V battery or can be powered by a BOSS PSA-series AC adaptor (ACA-series adaptors are not compatible due to higher current draw).
  • Signal Path: The DSD-2 features an analog dry signal path, which helps maintain the original signal's integrity.

Vintage Appeal

  • Due to its short production run and unique combination of effects, the BOSS DSD-2 is a highly sought-after item by collectors and vintage gear enthusiasts. While the sampling time is very short by modern standards, its robust build, simple interface, and the quality of its delay sound (identical to the DD-2) make it a classic pedal that can still add unique textures to a musician's sound. It is considered an early precursor to modern looping pedals
