Supro Dupro.
Here is a rare, original 1966 Supro Big Star 1688T 212 Combo. It's made by Valco Chicago 51 and is rated at 35 watts (unlike the reissue 25 watts). It has two 12" special design speakers. Two channels. Tremolo and spring reverb. It is in good cosmetic condition with a few corner scuffs and some staining on the grill cloth. The badge, feet and original leather handle are intact. The circuit, valves and speakers are all original and it has a 2 pronged, ungrounded plug. As with any vintage amp in original condition it should be seen to by a qualified tech before regular use. It has been tested on a variac and sounds marvellous. The trem and reverb work. A rare and collectible amp in original, untouched condition.
The Supro Big Star 1688T is a renowned tube-powered guitar combo amplifier, known for its vintage tone, robust Class-A power section, and the use of two 12-inch speakers. It was originally produced by Valco in the 1960s and has been reissued by Supro USA.
Key Features and Specifications
The Supro Big Star 1688T (the "T" indicates tremolo) features a unique design that is celebrated by musicians for its touch dynamics and wide range of classic tones, from warm jazz to high-gain rock.
Power Output: 25 watts (reissue model) or ~35 watts (vintage model), cathode-biased Class-A power.
Speakers: Two custom-designed 12" speakers (Supro DT12 in the reissue).
Tubes: The reissue uses two 6973 power tubes and four 12AX7EH preamp tubes.
Channels: Dual channels wired in parallel. Channel 1's bass EQ is voiced an octave below Channel 2, and combining them creates a huge, wide-ranging sound.
Controls: Independent volume controls for each channel, shared tone control, and tube-driven tremolo.
Construction: Hand-assembled in the USA (reissue), featuring a vintage-correct wide-body cabinet.
Experts and players consistently praise the Supro Big Star 1688 for its unique sound and performance, which is distinct from Fender or Marshall amps.
Tone: Described as having a "phenomenal sound with natural tube compression" and a complex midrange texture. It's noted for easily achieving the early Led Zeppelin tones associated with Jimmy Page.
Versatility: The dual-channel design offers a huge variety of tones, from clean to dirty blues and rock, which can be controlled simply by adjusting the guitar's volume knob.
Pedal Platform: Reviewers note that the amp takes pedals well, making it a versatile choice for guitarists who use effects.
Volume: Despite being rated at 35 watts, users find it to be "loud as hell" and powerful enough for gigging in small to medium-sized venues.
