Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a quality 1st generation dynamic microphone manufactured by Electro Voice during the early 1950's to late 1950's but happens to be an Ampex variant called the H-1390. It was the exact same mic that was sold under license. This H-1390 / 636 model mic was first manufactured in the early 1950's but the 2nd generation 636 was made well into the late 1960's. This 1st gen 636 comes with the period 418 model E.V desk stand shown as well as the short cable in which to operate.

The 636 was a rugged affordable dynamic microphone that generally held up very well over the decades and was used for a wide variety of purposes. This will make an excellent HAM radio mic.

Pic # 2 shows this very 1st generation mic in a 1950's E.V catalog along with quite a few other models.

In pic # 3 you'll see Richie Valens using one of these at a live performance. These were pretty decent sounding mics back in their day.

It should be noted that this 636 has a factory set Hi Z element and has a very "rockabilly" tone that is bright and clear being void of bass. If you want a 636 with a bit of bass and more mid range then the Low Z version is the way to go.

The polished chrome housing has held up very well with a minimum of cosmetic wear. It's quite a gem really. Extremely lite scratches and pitting as seen in the pics provided. It has an impressive luster and there are zero dents on this old girl. The on / off switch and joint mechanism work just fine. The front screen is free of any dents or corrosion. Just very lite tarnish.

The threads for the stand and cable are in perfect condition. The short 8 inch cable is soft pliable and in very nice overall condition with very lite wear. It has the quality Switchcraft male XLR end connector. Simply leave the short cable on the mic at all times then use any longer XLR cable as an extension to your audio equipment when needed. It's a practical set up.

I would rate this mic a very conservative 8 + on a scale of 1 - 10 physically speaking. Many would rate higher.

The matching E.V 418 model desk stand makes for a very stable platform being both heavy and low profile. The stand has an elegant design and comes with the original coffee brown paint scheme. This 418 was sold by E.V for about 20 years and a very desirable model from that timeline.

As you can see the stand is just about as nice as the mic and comes with all of it original accessories. The cable clamp, mounting bolt and rubber pads all work great. Most of the wear is on the bottom of the base. Please let the detailed pics be your guide.

This set up is ready to go.

As with all my vintage microphones...
