The Walnut/Bubinga combination is what gives this drum its personality. Walnut supplies depth and warmth, while Bubinga brings density and projection. The Maple Sound Focus Rings tighten everything into a controlled, articulate voice that records beautifully and projects clearly on stage.
The Sound Arc hoops noticeably enhance rimshots and cross-stick tones. They feel precise and consistent under the stick. Tuning is stable and predictable, with a wide usable range from tight crack to full-bodied punch.
Visually, the Gloss Claro Walnut finish is outstanding in person. Deep figuring, rich tone, and immaculate lacquer work. The diamond inlay band adds just enough boutique character without being flashy.
This is not a standard production drum. The STAR Reserve line is Tama’s boutique tier, built in Japan with premium materials and craftsmanship. If you’ve been waiting for a Vol. 3 example in near-new condition, this is a strong one.
