Yamaha Recording Custom Snare Drum // 5.5 x 14 inch - Black - Album Used

This Yamaha SD-955R (Made in Japan, March 1983 – serial “JJ”) was my primary snare during the early years of Gym Class Heroes and was used when recording drums for “Cupid’s Chokehold.”

I was a founding member of the band and tracked drums with this snare during that era. The drum has since remained in my personal collection. I mention this simply as historical context for anyone who appreciates the story behind an instrument.

Condition

• Considering its age (over 40 years old!), the drum is in good overall condition.
• Original shell and hardware
• Normal cosmetic wear consistent with use
• Chrome shows light age-related wear but functions properly
• Throw-off operates nicely, though it bends slightly inward (which doesn't seem to effect function)
• Classic early Yamaha birch character — focused, articulate, controlled with plenty of crack when tuned medium to high. It has always recorded beautifully.

The drum still sounds excellent when freshly tuned (I typically used a DrumDial for balanced tension). However, I do believe the shell is slightly out of round. Heads seat and tune up, but not quite as cleanly as they once did. I’ve included a photo showing the shell resting on a flat surface for reference. Because of this, I would describe it as a strong player’s drum with documented history rather than a collector-grade example. Please review all photos carefully. Sold as-described due to the disclosed shell condition. It will be packed thoughtfully and securely.

Why I’m Selling
I’m moving this drum along as I refine my current setup. It’s served me well for many years, and I’d rather see it played and appreciated than kept in storage.
