CONDITON: The overall is excellent, showing minimal signs of haevy play wear. No heavy marks of sings, no paint breaks. there is one little rash mark on one of the points. But other than that she is clean.

The 2001 Gibson Explorer '76 Reissue was part of a production run that aimed to capture the essence of the 1976 reintroduction of the original 1958 Explorer design, but utilized mahogany instead of the original's korina wood.

Production History

The "Explorer '76" model was a key part of Gibson's lineup during the 1990s and early 2000s, building on the initial 1976 reissue.

  • Original Run (1958): The Explorer was first introduced in 1958 with a radical, futuristic design made from korina wood, but was unsuccessful and discontinued in 1963.
  • First Reissue (1976): The model was reintroduced in 1976, largely due to its growing popularity among hard rock and metal musicians. This reissue featured a mahogany body and neck, a departure from the original korina, and typically had gold hardware.
  • The 1990-2002 Reissue Series: The specific design that the 2001 model belongs to began production around 1990 and was officially named the "Explorer '76" from 1991 to 2002. The 2001 model falls at the end of this particular naming convention, just before the "X-Plorer" rebrand in 2002.

Key Features (2001 Model)

The 2001 Gibson Explorer '76 Reissue was known for several specific features that differentiated it from the 1958 original or other variations:

  • Body and Neck: It featured a mahogany body and neck, not korina.
  • Neck Profile: The neck on these '76 reissues tended to be a slimmer, more comfortable 60's style profile, as opposed to the chunkier 50's style of the original Explorers.
  • Pickups: The 2001 models were typically equipped with dual ceramic magnet humbuckers (specifically the 496R and 500T models), known for a hot, powerful sound popular in hard rock and metal genres.
  • Hardware and Controls: It featured chrome-plated metalwork and the original-style straight-line control layout with a long pickguard.
  • Collectibility: 90's era Gibson Explorers, including the 2001 model, have become more sought after in recent years and are considered excellent examples of Gibson USA craftsmanship from that period.
