For several decades, Ibanez has established itself as one of the most innovative names in electric guitars, with a rare ability to continually evolve its instruments while remaining extremely attentive to the needs of guitarists. The AZ Series perfectly embodies this philosophy: designed to offer modern ergonomics, outstanding playing precision and remarkable versatility, it has become in just a few years an essential reference for demanding players.
The AZ Premium Series takes this recipe further with a particularly refined level of finish and an excellent price-to-performance ratio. The AZ24P1QM-DOB is a superb example, featuring an elegant body topped with a beautiful quilted maple veneer, a particularly striking Deep Ocean Blonde finish and a roasted maple neck that is both visually appealing and exceptionally comfortable to the touch.
The playability is immediately impressive. The AZ Oval C neck profile offers a particularly successful balance between modern comfort and a familiar feel, while the roasted maple fingerboard and 305 mm radius make it equally well suited to rhythm playing, technical passages, bends and solos. The 22 Jumbo stainless steel frets provide excellent precision and a wonderfully smooth playing feel. As always with the AZ platform, the body ergonomics and upper-fret access have been carefully designed, resulting in an extremely comfortable guitar whether played sitting or standing.
The hardware is fully in keeping with the ambitions of this AZ Premium. It features a Gotoh T1502 bridge and Gotoh MG-T locking tuners, two components that directly contribute to the instrument’s precision and tuning stability. The guitar also benefits from Ibanez’s dyna-MIX9 switching system combined with the Alter Switch, providing no fewer than 9 tonal configurations from the HSS pickup layout. This is one of the AZ’s major strengths: it can move effortlessly from clear, articulate clean tones to thicker and more powerful sounds.
The Seymour Duncan Hyperion pickups were chosen with precisely this versatility in mind. The bridge humbucker delivers plenty of power, definition and dynamics for driven tones, while the two single-coils retain the clear attack and rich harmonic character expected from an excellent HSS configuration. The guitar is therefore particularly comfortable in blues, rock, pop, funk and more modern styles, while maintaining a strong and distinctive sonic personality.
Beyond its particularly impressive specification, it is above all the coherence of the entire instrument that stands out. With this AZ Premium, Ibanez has succeeded in creating a modern, extremely comfortable, precise and remarkably versatile guitar without making it feel cold or impersonal. The quality of the neck, stainless steel frets, Gotoh hardware, Seymour Duncan pickups and excellent ergonomics make this a remarkably complete instrument.
The Deep Ocean Blonde finish, beautifully enhanced by the quilted maple top, also gives the guitar a genuine visual presence: an instrument that is as elegant as it is effective, offering a level of performance very close to what one would expect from a high-end guitar, while remaining particularly attractive in terms of its equipment and overall value.
A superb AZ Premium: modern, versatile and exceptionally well thought out. It is an excellent introduction to the AZ world, while being more than capable of satisfying an experienced guitarist looking for a distinctive and highly versatile instrument.
