And now for something you don’t see everyday…
a *STEREO* (dual) 18-watt Marshall “baby bluesbreaker” style amp in a single head. That is effectively two complete amps in one…. Two separate end-to-end signal paths from input jack to output jacks, living in one large-box Marshall plexi head shell, sharing a single power transformer. (You only have to plug in one power cable).
Someone’s crazy idea was made into reality by Randy Fay, the uber-knowledgeable and cool-as-hell owner/builder of Phaez amplifiers in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and is a one-off, one-of-a-kind custom build. I bought it used, so I don’t know its full origin story and the details were kind of fuzzy when I asked Randy. He did recall building it back in the earlier days of Phaez (It is marked 2011).
If you love the “normal” channel on the 1974x or TMB, this has two of those channels that you can run Independently, each into their own cabinets, or into a stereo cab, like I did. No more lugging around 2 full amplifiers for your stereo setup. Just use either side when you just need one amp, or split your signal and use both when you need a stereo rig or just need double the power!
This thing is quite loud. 18 watts is not quiet. Two of ‘em side-by-side is formidable. It can definitely hang with a hard-bashin’ drummer and a mostly-deaf bass player, from my own experience…
Also, it’s a cool stereo recording tool and pretty good with pedals. If you use stereo reverbs, delays or phasers, this thing is an absolute BLAST.
Tubes included are a matched quad (2 pairs) of JJs. Preamp tubes are three JJ 12AX7s. (why three preamp tubes? If I recall, the two circuits each use one side of the first (middle) preamp tube for the driver, then split off again).
As you can see from the front panel, the pairs of inputs and controls are “mirrored” from the center going out. There is a low and high on each channel, and YES YOU CAN link them together with a Y-cable on the same channel for further insanity. This opens up the possibility for A/B/Y boxes and footswitches and the combinations become endless!
