Follows description from Equipboard:

The Boss PH-1 Phaser is a classic, early analog effects pedal known for its simple two-knob control, warm sound, and robust construction. It was one of Boss's first compact pedals, originally designed to emulate the sound of a rotating speaker cabinet but quickly embraced for its unique phasing effect.

Key Features and Description

  • Analog Circuitry: The PH-1 is a fully analog pedal, which contributes to its "lush, natural warmth" and classic vintage sound that many musicians prefer over modern digital alternatives.
  • Simple Controls: The pedal features a straightforward, two-knob interface for easy operation:
    • Rate: Controls the speed of the phasing sweep, ranging from a very slow 16 seconds to a fast 100 milliseconds.
    • Depth: Adjusts the intensity or profoundness of the effect, from shallow to deep.
  • 4-Stage Phasing: It utilizes a four-stage phasing circuit, which provides a smooth, subtle, and musical modulation effect.
  • Durable Build: Like all Boss pedals from that era, it is known for its durable construction and reliability, making it suitable for live performances.
  • Historical Significance: Produced in Japan from November 1977 to November 1981, it was one of the initial trio of Boss compact pedals (along with the OD-1 Over Drive and SP-1 Spectrum).
  • Power Supply: The original unit requires a 9V DC (BOSS ACA) power supply or a 9V battery.

Sound Profile

Reviewers praise the PH-1 for its subtle, three-dimensional warmth and "syrupy" sound, which some compare to a less aggressive version of the MXR Phase 90 or Phase 45 with more depth adjustment. It is versatile enough for various genres, from laid-back music to rock and funk, and can produce sounds bordering on the vintage Uni-Vibe effect.

The PH-1 was later succeeded by the Boss PH-1r, which added a third "Resonance" (feedback) control for a more pronounced and customizable effect. The original PH-1, without this control, is valued for its inherent, classic tone and simplicity.
