Follows description from Equipboard:
The Boss PS-2 Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay is a vintage compact pedal that combines both digital pitch shifting and delay effects, known for its distinct, lo-fi digital sound from the late 1980s and early 1990s. It is prized by musicians for creating unique textures, harmonies, and experimental soundscapes.
Key Features and Controls
The PS-2 offers dual functionality with six distinct modes selected via the MODE knob:
- Delay Modes: Three modes provide different maximum delay times, adjustable via the FINE/MANUAL knob:
- 125ms (milliseconds)
- 500ms
- 2s (seconds)
These modes are noted for their unique, high-pass filter delay repeats that become progressively brighter.
- Pitch Shifting Modes: Three modes allow for pitch manipulation:
- Manual: The pitch shift amount (within one octave up or down) is continuously adjusted using the FINE/MANUAL knob. Turning the knob during use can produce "far out" cascading, detuned effects.
- +1 Octave: Shifts the pitch one octave up.
- -1 Octave: Shifts the pitch one octave down.
Additional controls include:
- Balance Knob: Adjusts the volume mix between the direct (unaffected) and the effect (wet) sounds.
- Feedback Knob: In Delay modes, this controls the number of repeats, from a single delay to controlled oscillation. In Pitch Shift modes, it can create "other-worldly noises" and unique oscillation effects.
- Tuner Output Jack: An external tuner (like a Boss TU-12) can be connected to this jack to help fine-tune the pitch interval in Manual mode.
Sonic Character
- The PS-2 is a sought-after vintage pedal, valued for its "quirky, musical character" and lo-fi digital degradation of repeats, which differs from cleaner modern pitch shifters and delay pedals. It can create a wide range of sounds, from subtle detuned textures and chorus-like effects to wild, experimental pitch bends, making it popular in genres like shoegaze and post-rock.
