The Sterling ST31 - super little hypercardiode FET condenser mic.
Not made for a long time now but still sounding fabulous.
We used these a Lot - and for a lot of sound sources in the studio, on drums as a center mic between the overheads, and I was always happy just using this and not the spaced pair (which were usually Josephsons) if mono drums were needed in the mix.
Acoustic instruments from guitars to metallophones - and great in tandem with a dynamic mic on guitar cabs - no need for eq - you'd just balance the two in the mix and voila! Perfect guitar tone.
On this tip - for clean guitar I'd nudge the Sterling slightly out of phase with the dynamic sometimes (like on Off the Wall by Michael Jackson) to get some sweet scooped tones to fit in a busy mix. Splendiferous!
Also..... for difficult sound sources - like the bassists doorbell / garden chimes or whatevs - this chap always worked where other mic wouldn't.
The old Neumann KM84i trick of pointing the mic upwards and having female vocalists sing across the diaphragm also worked beautifully with this mic - that extra breathy top end silk. Nice!
Some small scratches and scrapes conducive with age and use - but generaly in v good cosmetic condition - and he's been well looked after so is working properly.
Put a bitta nice in your mic drawer!
