The scalloped bracing provides a resonant, open sound with excellent projection, making it ideal for both strumming and fingerstyle playing. This J45 provides that classic dry, woody Gibson sound that has defined countless recordings. 1955 was the first year of the batwing pickguard. It was produced early in 1955 as this J-45 has scalloped bracing, which Gibson transitioned away from later that year. This “workhorse” has its original tuners with replacement buttons. It's ready to be played for another 70+ years. Professional neck reset, bridge reglue and setup by master luthier Gordon Groves in Tucson, AZ. Other prior repairs include a center top seam split and the typical split between the sound hole and the treble side of the neck. This is not a refinished guitar and the paint is all original but for a small repair by the end pin that appears to have been touched up very well (see last photo of this repair).
- Additional Comments: Gibson J-45s from this period can be heard across decades of recordings in the hands of country stars, folk legends, singer-songwriters and solo instrumentalists. It is one of America's most iconic acoustic guitars. Its sloped shoulders and more mellow tone set it apart from Martin's legendary dreadnoughts. Those exact quirks are the reason so many have fallen in love with the Gibson J-45. Vintage specimens (especially pre-1970) are incredibly collectible. Ones in this condition that are ready to play for years to come rarely come up for sale.
