Vintage Tone, 4.9k-ish Ohms, Large Alnico 5 Rods

The "Super Brimstone" hand wound Humbucker-Sized Single Coil by Down South Guitars is one part of the Down South Guitars "Super Fire and Super Brimstone" Hand wound Tele set. Based on an early-1950's design, this particular Neck is a plus model, meaning slightly overwound, but because this design uses a thicker copper wire than what most people traditionally use for winding Tele Necks with, the reading seems lower that you might expect. If I used the industry standard sized wire for this pickup, it would most likely measure in the 6.5k - 7k ohms range, just to give you a better idea of the output level.

The fully-charged, quarter inch diameter Alnico 5 rod magnets residing in this neck allows a wealth of twang and top-end, surprising for a Tele-style neck. Perfect for backgrounds or rhythm playing or brightening up a darker sounding guitar. Punchy mids and thick presence, accompanied by a large bass signal makes for the perfect pair to the Fire or Fire+ Bridge. Like a cool summer afternoon, the hand-wound warmth and twangy tone will simply wash over you. The larger than standard quarter inch diameter Alnico 5 rod magnets used in this design allow for a bigger bottom end and punchier mids, with the signature twang and brightness that this set creates. Sharp treble, wide mids, and large bass end is the Super Brimstone. I cannot recommend this in the bridge position because of the low wind count it won't have all that much cut, but is killer in the neck of a vintage axe. Also, this is a very tall pickup, height-wise, so in a thin super strat guitar, you might not be able to drop the pickup as low as you would like, just be advised. The low output will allow for a closer position to the strings to balance out anyway so it is not much of an issue. A thicker body like a Les Paul or Tele won't be much of an issue if at all, just thought I'd mention that.

The extra ohms are because of the wider housing of the humbucker mount, because the coil is further from the neck, the extra turns of wire are needed to sound like a standard Brimstone, even thought the pole pieces are closer. While the larger rod magnets give a bigger sound, if you want a serious and faithful vintage-output stunner of a Tele neck for the neck position of a humbucker guitar, or if you play or write in the country, blues, or classic rock neighborhood, don't look any further!
