Here is a Conn New Wonder Transitional, also known as the model 6M Alto, in ALMOST Wonderful condition. It needs a few pads and a neck cork to make it functional, though a full repad would really do the trick and make this an amazing horn once again.
This is the same model of Conn that in short order adopts the “Naked Lady” engraving and becomes an iconic American woodwind.
These horns are called “Transitional” because they are the intermediary stage between the older New Wonder Series and the 6M (alto) or 10M (tenor). As such, the features of the horns can and often do share a bit of both older and newer horns. In this case, the horn features rolled tone holes, split bell keys, a micro tuner neck, and a nail file G#. As you can see from the photos, this nearly 100 year old horn is in amazing condition. It is exceptionally clean, features smoothly functioning keys, has a beautiful satin silver finish with the gold washed bell, and has a perfectly preserved and unworn bell engraving.
I should say here, that I am not a saxophonist. Fortunately for me, one of my sons, is. He tried out the horn and it played well, with the exception of three or four of the lower register keys, where the pads were leaking. The neck cork is also on its last legs. So, at this point in time, the horn is not playable. It needs to have a few pads replaced. But let us be clear; the pads that are on it are original. What is working today may not be working next month. At some point, a full repad will be necessary.
The serial number, 243536 puts it at a production year of 1930. The padded case is not original, but is in good working order.
This could well be a fantastic project alto. The bones are all there and they are in great shape. The sound of these horns was the sound of the Big Band era. The silver finish is sure to garner attention in the studio or on the stage. The reputation of Conn horns from this era is richly deserved.
Please be sure to check out the photos carefully, as we have tried to capture this horn from all angles.
