=========================================================================

The Julius Keilwerth SX90R Nickel Silver (often known as the Shadow or Vintage models depending on the finish) is widely considered one of the most powerful and unique professional saxophones on the market.

Unlike standard brass saxophones, these horns use German Nickel Silver for the body, which significantly alters the resonance and response.

Key Features & Design

The SX90R series is famous for its "Big Sound," designed to mimic the wide-bore feel of vintage American horns like the Conn 10M, but with modern German precision.

  • Nickel Silver Body: This alloy is denser and stiffer than brass. It results in a very high resonance, quick response, and a "popping" centered sound.
  • Rolled Tone Holes: The "R" in SX90R stands for Soldered Tone Hole Rings. Keilwerth solders rings onto the tone holes to create a larger surface area for the pads, which provides a tighter seal and a darker, more resonant core.
  • Adjustable Palm Keys: A rare feature in the sax world; you can adjust the height and angle of the palm keys to fit your hand size perfectly.
  • G# Lever Mechanism: Includes a specialized mechanism to prevent the common issue of the G# key sticking.

Tonal Profile: How it Competes

If you are used to the "Selmer sound" (focused, elegant ), the Keilwerth Nickel Silver will feel like a different beast entirely.

  • The "Wall of Sound": It produces a massive amount of volume and harmonic overtones. It is often described as "less polite" than a Yamaha or Selmer.
  • Resistance: Because of the material density, there is a slight "blow-back" or resistance that allows you to push the horn very hard without the sound "breaking."
  • Ergonomics: Keilwerth horns have a larger bore and a wider feel in the hands. Players with smaller hands sometimes find the reach to the low keys a bit more substantial than on French or Japanese saxes.
