Solano Speed Shop — “Impossibly Thin Tele” (Fall 2024, Neck-Through Hollow Body)

This is the Impossibly Thin Tele — a one-off handbuilt guitar that started as an experiment and ended up as something genuinely unusual and extraordinarily playable. The project began with parts already on hand and a curiosity about how thin a neck-through hollow body could feel and play. What emerged is a guitar with a body depth of only about an inch, offering a unique balance of lightness, resonance, and physical feedback that’s unlike a typical solid Tele-style instrument.

The construction is neck-through with roasted flame maple and subtle purpleheart laminations. Its hollow body design keeps it light and lively, and the Tru-Oil finish lets the natural wood character speak without dampening complexity. The slim C neck feels fast and familiar, while the 25.5″ scale and 12″ radius make it comfortable for rhythm and lead alike.

Electronics are straightforward and powerful: Dual Wilkinson Humbuckers shown in the photos have been replaced with StewMac Overwound Zebracoils featuring Alnico 5 Magnets. They have been wired with independent volume and tone controls and a 3-way selector. This setup gives you real output and dynamics — responsive to your fingers and your amp.

Hardware is reliable and road-ready with a Hipshot bridge and Gotoh tuners in black. The overall feel is light, balanced forward, and very playable — a guitar that invites experimentation and doesn’t feel like any other Tele shaped guitar you’ve picked up.
