Akai M-6 tape deck chopped down and turned into a pair of tube mic preamps
- Mic in, Hi-Z in, -10dbu line output
- 76dBu of gain
- +48V phantom power
- Buffered VU meter drive circuit allows 0.18% THD @ 1khz with the VU meter engaged
- T-Pad attenuator
- +/-2dBu 40Hz-20Khz
Very compact and portable, even has a lid for the case. I modified the original 60’s tolex case instead of building a new enclosure, to retain it‘s mojo. Both channels are identical.
Many EF86 tubes were rolled to select the quietest ones. RCA cleartop 12AU7’s, NEC 6x4’s.
Left knob is gain, right knob is an output attenuator. Input is automatically switched to Hi-Z when plugging into the Hi-Z input. The only switch is phantom on/off, with the VU meter backlight serving as the phantom power indicator.
Please note that the XLR jacks were upgraded to Switchcraft D3F later on
