Pan American was an off shoot cheaper brand produced in the same factory as conn trumpets, although often with cheaper designs and parts. The only notable cost cut I can see is a 2 piece bell and maybe a little less styling on the bell as well as simpler bracing.
The tone goes from dark to laser shooter over the top lead very easily and is incredibly expressive. It’s a very fun big band horn, and small group jazz horn.
It’s a small bore horn that was purchased from upyourbrass here on reverb, it was restored mostly through cleaning and still has a bit of an old brass instrument smell to it but is otherwise in good playable condition. It requires oiling valves pretty much every session, but they just get slow instead of stuck.
Tone and slotting are a bit off compared to my modern shires, but it’s fun to play and helps me approach a little more of a legit 20’s 30’s jazz tones.
I purchased the conn 4 mouthpiece for a matching vintage setup, it has quite a different gap/length compared to most modern setups.
