Gibson / 1942 J-35

"A legendary instrument with a longer history than the J-45"

The J-35 was introduced in 1936.
Specifications such as the round-shouldered body, 14-fret jointed neck, rectangular bridge, and long saddle were carried over to the J-45, which was introduced in 1942.
This guitar is from 1942, the same year as the J-45.

- Unique Features of the J-35

The head shape is not the usual curved stock, but rather a distinctive head shape that bulges out towards the top.
The J-35 also features a distinctive logo, with a script logo written in white ink.

The top is made of spruce, and the rosette is seven-layer multicolored.
The sound hole is also located slightly below the end of the fingerboard.
The body is finished in a natural color, which began appearing around 1939.

The pickguard features the firestripe pattern inherited from the Advance Jambo.
Despite being over 80 years old, it retains its unique luster.

The sides and back are made of mahogany.
The body color is finished in a light walnut color.
The warm impression is clearly evident in the mahogany's hues.

The fingerboard is made of rosewood and features dot position markers.

The mahogany neck has a thick C-shape, and combined with a 43.5mm nut width, it feels solid and comfortable to hold.
The neck may be a major factor in the powerful, expansive sound.

The neck shows signs of having been previously reset.
This was done to achieve the correct neck angle and a comfortable playing feel, resulting in excellent playability.

The rectangular bridge is made of rosewood and features long saddles.
A horizontal crack has been repaired due to years of use, but it's clear that the guitar has been carefully maintained and used.

The tuning machines feature KLUSON triple tuning machines with a PAT stamp.
The guitar operates with such stability that it's hard to believe it's a pre-war guitar.

This is a small detail, but the inside of the body features six side ribbons (to prevent cracks) on each side (12 in total), all made of cloth.
The 1941 SJ-200 also uses the same material, but it has been confirmed that the 1950s Gibson J-50 uses a wooden material instead.
These tape-like side ribbons may also be a feature unique to pre-war guitars.

Observing this instrument reveals the reasons it has been used so many times.
There's paint chipping on the neck, scratches from playing, and dents on the body and headstock.
This guitar reminds us that these factors may also be important factors in the powerful, all-encompassing sound we hear the moment we stroke.

[Representative Comment: Hoshino]

The sound is simply powerful.
It's thick, yet crisp and sharp, making it comfortable to play even with strumming strokes.
It's a guitar you'll want to keep playing.
