From Austin, Texas, Collings captivates players with its meticulous craftsmanship. The brand's exceptional build quality and precision ensure a traditional approach combined with unparalleled reliability. This instrument, the "OM1A JL Julian Lage Signature," features options added to the signature guitar of jazz guitarist Julian Lage, matching his own. Manufactured in 2018, this pre-owned instrument features an Adirondack spruce top, Honduras mahogany back and sides, Honduras mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, MOP fingerboard dot inlays, tortoiseshell binding, tortoiseshell pickguard, Wibury nickel relic tuning machines, early Collings inlay headstock logo, custom T-series scalloped X bracing (non-tang), and a satin finish. A strap pin is attached to the side of the neck heel. Bill Collings first met the talented young jazz musician Julian Lage in 2014. The two had many deep conversations about their respective ideas of "craft." Julian Lage's profound insight was especially persuasive, making him a key figure who had a profound influence on Collings. This rare collaboration, which continued until Bill Collings's death in July 2017, resulted in a new guitar with a nostalgic soul. While based on the OM1T, it also reflects Julian's personal preferences and passion. Based on his beloved Martin 000-18'39, this guitar meticulously recreates the feel of the vintage neck he was accustomed to, precisely recreating the asymmetrical feel of a well-played instrument. Its 42.9mm nut width, OM scale, and extremely light bodyweight are also distinctive features, and the finish has a aged, aged quality. It combines a thick, matte tone with an open, wide range, and the precise, solid response that is characteristic of Collings. The quick, smooth, silky attack makes it easy to connect notes, and the sound is well-balanced, with a good sense of separation yet a good sense of cohesion. The tone alone reveals that this guitar was designed and manufactured at a high level to achieve both sound and practicality. It features a retrofitted 2nd Factor passive contact pickup, which delivers a tone that incorporates the airiness of the body and a dry resonance. While the output is low due to its passive nature, it offers the flexibility to adjust the tone while increasing the volume with your preferred preamp. If you prioritize an acoustic sound, this pickup is highly versatile. There are scratches on the surface of the pickguard, likely from playing, and a faint mark and shine on the side of the bridge near the first string. One of the scratches is a slightly deeper one, there's a scratch directly below the 5th and 3rd strings that appears to have been made by a pick or fingernail, there's a similar scratch on the inside of the pickguard, there's a shiny area on the edge of the sound hole on the 1st string side, and there are small scratches and a slight shine on the back of the body near the 6th string, and although there are some signs of use, most of the scratches are likely due to playing. It's clear that this guitar has been well-used. Even with these, there are few obvious signs of wear at first glance, and it's in relatively good condition. The neck plays well, as expected of a Collings guitar, with very little fret wear and even the saddle remaining intact. This instrument has been extremely popular since its release, demonstrating Bill's passion. It's a wonderful instrument that conveys the passion Bill left behind. Experience this high quality for yourself.
