Conn Vintage One 1FG Flugelhorn – Gold Brass – Fred Powell Design – Eastlake Era – NAMM Demo
This is a Conn Vintage One 1FG flugelhorn in essentially new condition. The Vintage One series represents Conn’s modern interpretation of Conn’s historic American brass heritage, designed to deliver a warm, lyrical flugelhorn sound with improved consistency and intonation.
This particular instrument was displayed as a dealer demo at the NAMM convention. Because of that, the horn shows only a few extremely light handling scratches on the bottom crook from being handled during the show. These marks are minor and difficult to see unless closely inspected. Otherwise the instrument remains virtually new with minimal playing time.
Please note: the bell may appear to show variations in color in some of the photos. This is simply a result of reflections from the light box used during photography. The lacquer finish is clean and consistent, and the instrument is essentially new aside from the very light handling marks mentioned above.
The horn features the standard 1FG configuration, including a gold brass bell that produces a rich, warm tonal character. Conn’s gold brass bells are known for delivering a darker, more lyrical sound while still maintaining excellent projection and clarity.
Tonally, the horn delivers exactly what players expect from a Conn flugelhorn—dark, round, and enveloping, with excellent blend and depth. The sound is broad and lyrical at softer dynamics, yet opens up smoothly when pushed without becoming edgy or brittle.
The horn plays with a relaxed, efficient blow, secure slotting, and dependable intonation throughout the range. Valves are smooth and responsive, slides move freely, and the instrument functions exactly as a professional flugelhorn should.
The Vintage One series is associated with respected brass instrument designer Fred Powell, known for his work with Kanstul, Lawler, Blessing, and his own boutique Powell instruments.
These flugelhorns were produced at the Conn-Selmer Eastlake, Ohio plant, which has recently closed. This instrument was built during the Eastlake production era, representing the final generation of U.S.-built Conn Vintage One brass instruments. Because of that closure, the future production of Vintage One instruments remains uncertain. There has been discussion that production could potentially move to Elkhart, Indiana, where Conn-Selmer maintains operations, though it is also possible that future production could eventually shift overseas.
The Vintage One 1FG is also known for its larger traditional flugelhorn wrap, which contributes to the broad tonal cushion and warm response these instruments are known for.
This model has become very popular with professional players, and many musicians who purchase one end up keeping it as their primary flugelhorn for years. The Vintage One series has developed a reputation for being one of the best modern flugelhorns produced in the United States, particularly those built during the Eastlake production era.

WHY THIS HORN
The Conn Vintage One 1FG offers a true American flugelhorn voice—warm, dark, and expressive, with a depth and character that many modern flugelhorns struggle to replicate. Its gold brass bell provides a rich tonal foundation with excellent blend, making it a favorite for lyrical playing and ensemble work.
Vintage One flugelhorns have developed a strong following among professional players. Many musicians who buy one end up keeping it as their main flugelhorn, thanks to the combination of tone, response, and traditional Conn character.
With the Conn-Selmer Eastlake plant now closed, instruments from this production era may become increasingly interesting to players who prefer U.S.-built brass instruments.
With new Vintage One flugelhorns typically retailing in the $3,300–$3,600 range, this is an opportunity to acquire an essentially new instrument while saving significantly compared to the cost of a brand-new retail example.
