If you're looking for a killer vintage acoustic with great tone and vibe, this vintage Gibson LG-1 model fits the bill perfectly. This guitar has 1964-era features including the wider and more desirable 1 11/16" nut along with the earlier style sunburst and brighter, more colorful pickguard. The serial number begins with 266xxx which categorizes it as a 1965 on some websites. it was probably crafted in late 1964 and serialized in very early 1965. Either way-it was definitely produced at the original Gibson factory in Kalamazoo Michigan, U.S.A. and the superior craftsmanship shows everywhere. The guitar is very solid and plays, sounds and looks killer. It is a very nice compact unit and it's perfect for songwriting and the stage; but best known for being THE Blues machine! The guitar has no breaks or splits-it is setup and ready to go, it needs nothing.
The body is the familiar 00-size which gives it a great volume and 'vintage' tone projection. The top is solid spruce with solid mahogany back and sides. This is a ladder-braced designed guitar and it is super solid-there are no creaks or funky vibrations. The finish has that nice vintage gloss and shines vibrantly. There is line checking all over the top, sides and back-giving it that amazing vintage mojo we all know and love. There are numerous signs of handling evidence here and there-see photos. The sides and back have a really cool "backgammon board" style grain contrast which is a characteristic of some prized mahogany woods. The neck joint is an excellent fitment. The neck angle is excellent. On the side of the neck heel there is a small (3/16”) touch up spot that is difficult to see and nothing more than a cosmetic, but I thought I would mentioned it. There is also some crazing of the finish on the sides of the body, which just adds to the vintage look. The edges are all flush and free of damage. Overall-the body is in excellent condition with the often-mentioned killer “vintage vibe” mojo from years of handling.
The neck is a Mahogany construction and it is nice and straight. It has a really clean and smooth feel. The neck profile is the typical C-shape. The nut is the earlier 1950's-style version which measures 1 11/16" wide. Gibson switched to a smaller 1 9/16" sized neck in 1965, so this one is the earlier and more desirable version. The neck depth measures .820” at the 1st fret and .980” at the 10th fret. The truss rod turns smoothly and the original tuners keep it in tune great. The headstock and logo display awesome with slight patina and excellent vintage vibe. The Brazilian rosewood fingerboard is clean and feels nice and soft. This guitar was refretted at some point-we just gave it a professional fret leveling, crowning and polish and she's ready to go. The fingerboard playing surface looks and feels great-see photos. The action is set very low and the guitars plays like butter. currently, the string height measures .010" at the 1st fret and only .065" at the 12th fret. If you prefer a higher action; I have included a saddle shim that sits out of sight underneath the saddle-it's easy to put on. The guitar plays so nicely as it is. It plays great up and down the fingerboard with a soft touch. There are no dead spots anywhere. The original plastic bridge was discarded and upgraded to a vintage style rosewood piece and as you probably already know, it really wakes up these guitars. They just come alive with the wood bridge with noticeable difference in volume, tone, sustain and even structural improvement over the original plastic version. The top of this guitar is in excellent shape-it is flat as a pancake-see photos.
The sound is the quintessential Gibson tone: a warm box full of range. It is perfect for singing over as it stays out of most everyone's vocal range. It is very comfortable and easy to wield. Being super lightweight-it is a joy to play and is the type of thing you just never get tired of. Comes complete with the vintage salt & pepper/bright red-lined case.
I have taken several photos to show how it looks in different lighting for your viewing.
