NAD receivers have always stood for uncompromised performance in comparison with separate amplifiers and tuners. The C740 is an excellent illustration of why. It is a combination of the C440 tuner and C340 amplifier on one chassis. The only difference in performance in comparison to the separates is slightly lower output power of the C740, for conservative single-chassis operation. The C740 is otherwise literally the sum of the separate components — an NAD "Building Block" product.

Design Basics: - The core of NAD receiver performance is the amplifier. And the C740's amplifier starts, as all NAD amplifiers do, with a solid, high-current output stage. Like the separate C340, its approach is entirely new — built around the fresh and effective Impedance Sensing Circuitry (ISC) configuration designed by Bjorn Erik Edvardsen. It's worth examination:

About ISC: - The new Impedance Sensing Circuitry used in the C740 allows it to deliver its maximum performanceunder virtually any circumstance, independent of the speaker load it faces. The circuitry automatically recognises the impedance characteristics of a loudspeaker and adjusts its power-supply settings to best cope with that specific load. RMS output power remains the same (at 50 Watts) with either an eight- or four-ohms load. And thanks to the usual solid NAD power supply, the C740 delivers 40 watts of dynamic power into 8 ohms, 90 watts at 4 ohms, and 140 watts at 2 ohms.

We take exception, as always, to the mindless "brochure power" approach to stating amplifier power, which doesn't give a realistic indication of an amplifier's true capabilities. Instead, the ISC topology is a practical approach that enables an amplifier to easily deal with dynamics and difficult loads. And our specifications reflect what the C740 will do under real conditions of use.

The C740 incorporates NAD's acclaimed switchable "Soft Clipping" circuit, which significantly reduces the risk of damage to loudspeakers due to prolonged high power operation. If you have a tendency to push music playback to the limit at times, Soft Clipping may save your loudspeakers.

Broadcast Reception: - The FM reception of the C740 is superb, with the sensitivity needed for weak signals and the selectivity required to separate closely-spaced, weak and strong stations on the band. The MOS-FET RF section and Front-End design together with high quality components and careful PCB layout guarantees excellent sensitivity with low intermodulation distortion to provide noise-free reception.

Although AM can never reach the quality of any FM transmission, the C740's AM section retains excellent clarity together with low background noise.

With 30 presets available, you can store all your favorite radio stations. These presets can be any combination of AM and FM stations: 25 presets for FM and 5 for AM, or 17 for FM and 13 for AM, for instance. You can store the presets in any of the three different banks, labeled A, B or C. This allows you to organize the presets to suit personal preferences. The C740 also deals with the problem of background noise on weak signals. Its special "Blend" function reduces this noise while still retaining adequate stereo separation.

The C740 allows you to individually name each preset with up to 8 characters. Once you have named your presets, you don't need to remember which frequency goes with what radio station. The name is indicated in the display every time the preset is recalled. Auto Search automatically stops at the next strong radio signal it comes across, and optimizes tuning. Weaker radio stations can be tuned in manually. And while almost all tuners on the market take 50 kHz or even 100kHz tuning steps on the FM band, the C740 takes 25 kHz steps — allowing for more precise and accurate tuning.

Other Features: - The C740 is fully remote-controlled, supplied with the NAD C Series system remote control. Since the C740 also has NAD Link, the remote will also operate many other NAD products such as CD players, tuners, and cassette decks..

Flexibility is another strong point. The C740 has 6 line inputs (including 2 tape in/outputs with dubbing facility) and the pre-amplifier section can be separated from the power amplifier for easy upgrades (bi-amping, for instance) or adding ancillary equipment without making the C740 redundant. The headphone socket will drive virtually any non-electrostatic headphone.

Other design features include the C740's generous power supply with over-rated output devices, which yields low noise and low distortion throughout. Although the protection circuitry will protect the amplifier against blatant cases of abuse, such as short circuiting the speakers, it doesn't intrude on or impair the integrity of the signal, even under the most demanding conditions. And the C740's superb build quality, using selected, close-tolerance components and excellent finish with aluminum front panel, ensure that it will provide many years of excellent and trouble-free performance.
