This unit has been fully tested. I didn't just throw a DVD in there and see if it played. I went through all the motions, menu options and MOST IMPORTANTLY - I tested the record function and played back the piece I recorded.
Some things you need to know about this unit.....
It can record "off air" but it's an analog tuner and those bands have been discontinued. You would need a digital adapter in order to do so. No loss, have you seen local broadcast TV? It's all on line now anyway. 
You cannot dub commercial DVD Movies or VHS (not sure about that one) because they have copy protection. 
Buy this unit to copy your own personal videos - family vids - etc. 
If you recorded something "off air" years ago with your VCR that you can dub and preserve onto DVD's

uses -R and -RW discs - not dvdram or +r or +RW

IMPORTANT. It's very important that the seller you decide to buy from actually TESTED the DVD record function. Most don't and will assume that if the DVD plays , it must record as well. Not true!
Recording is very sensitive and I have seen tons of these players that play DVD's fine but will not work on record. It MUST Be tested thoroughly. I did that so YOU do not have to worry and find out way late and have no recourse with the seller. 
I did this homework. Most wouldn't even know how to and what discs to use. 
It's a complicated unit and you really need to have the owner's manual. It's a LOT of pages and many do not need it, as they may be replacing one that gave out, For this reason I will send the pdf file of the full English manual via email after you paid, sent me your regular email address so I can send it to you.
