Comments:

The StingRay was introduced in 1976 by MusicMan as a revolutionary instrument that defined the "active bass sound". It was the first production bass to feature an on-board active equalizer, allowing players to boost or cut frequencies directly from the instrument. After selling his namesake company, Leo Fender co-founded Music Man in 1971 with former Fender executives Forrest White and Tom Walker. Co-designed by Leo Fender and Tom Walker, the StingRay built upon the Precision Bass blueprint but added modern innovations like an oversized Alnico humbucker near the bridge and a 3+1 tuning key configuration to eliminate "dead spots" on the neck. It gained immediate fame in funk, disco, and rock through artists like Louis Johnson (Brothers Johnson) and Bernard Edwards (Chic). After Ernie Ball acquired Music Man in 1984, the company made several key updates. By 1995, the six-bolt neck joint (introduced in 1989) had replaced the older 3-bolt and 4-bolt designs, offering superior stability and sustain. Players could now choose between the original two-band EQ (bass and treble only) and the newer three-band EQ (bass, mid, and treble), which had been introduced around 1987. Two-band models like the one for sale here typically featured the output jack on the chrome control plate, while three-band models moved it to the side of the body to make room for the extra control knob.
