Fantastic collectible and rare Thunderbird bass that looks beautiful, plays great, sounds awesome, and OOZES MOJO FROM EVERY PORE. I'm the second owner, and the original owner (a professional player from New Orleans) bought it at the 2005 Custom Shop ROADWORN auction. If you’re not familiar with the history - Gibson opened a new factory a few blocks away. They didn't want to move a lot of their demos and overstock. So they held a huge action. There were only 502 guitars of various types at the auction this Thunderbird was one if them. Since these were primarily demo guitars, prototypes and touring loaned guitars, they didn't want to include a warranty. So they branded the word
"ROADWORN" on these 502 guitars..
Gibson most likely used this guitar at trade shows, NAMM and possibly in their store front. The ROADWORN guitars are known for generally being exceptional builds.
That said, I bought it because I wanted a bass, saw it available andalready knew the backstory on the ROADWORN gear, which I just think is really cool. That was two years ago and I’ve only ever played it a few minutes at a time, mostly just taking it out of the case to show friends. I'm really just into guitar - stuck on my Strats and LP, and I don't need to keep collector's pieces around if they aren't going to be played regularly, and still haven’t made any effort to lease learn bass.
So I'm throwing this one out to someone who will hopefully use it often and on stage even better.
The guitar is in excellent condition, only the usual minor swirlies in the finish and one small cosmetic ding of note on the lower front bout (pictured). The finish and woods are amazing. Frets are in really nice shape with no visible ruts or wear, and the guitar plays beautifully through the neck, which has SUPERB access and is a great feeling neck!
I've put what I think are a decent assortment of photos but I'm happy to answer any questions AND send you as many photos as you want.
SHIPPING THIS BEAST WILL BE EXPENSIVE!! The case is HUGE and it weights 25.8lbs without any packing materials! Shipping costs are on the rise, and my shipping price covers box and materials, AND Reverb's insurance which will run around $70 on this guitar. It will be packaged well in an appropriate box, with at least one extra layer of cardboard around it if not more (where possible) in addition to bubble, foam, etc as necessary to protect while in transit.
Please note that I also check shipping prices, fully insured, through Shipnerd and reserve the right to ship through them if Reverb rates seem inordinately high. They invariably partner with UPS just like reverb, and tracking is still provided through reverb, but also through Shipnerd and the carrier.
Also, I list all my for sale items across multiple platforms (Facebook Marketplace, gear page, a few bulletin boards, and by word of mouth among my guitar buddies and at jams). Obviously, my Louisiana peeps have an advantage buying locally, but Reverb is an amazing marketplace and I price my items competitively. I entertain reasonable offers and try as hard as I can to be a straight shooter and describe items and answer questions accurately and honestly. If you're watching this guitar and it suddenly vanishes, I may have temporarily deleted the listing if I've agreed to show the guitar to someone locally in the immediate future. Usually someone willing to drive to Baton Rouge to see gear is legitimately prepared to buy but if such a deal fall through I’ll reactivate the listing and it should come up again in your follow list.
Thanks for looking,
And please read my feedback, I try hard to be fair and honest in my descriptions, pricing and dealings.
