Original 1959 Les Paul Special Double Cutaway.
the Old Growth mahogany gives the SWEETEST and most RESONANT guitar imaginable!
This does NOT have original parts on it, I bought it from "Vintage Correct Parts" on ebay about 10 years ago and bought it to play and enjoy as my main rehearsal and stage guitar! The reissue tuners, knobs, pickups, pots are all fantastic and work perfectly. I did actually buy a vintage 1960 P90 to install in bridge position and it's great as you can imagine. The neck pickup is a low output vintage style P90 style from an American winder and it sounds absolutely stunning, a near perfect match with the bridge. The neck pickup was moved away from the neck in 1960, but this 1959 does have the superior tone without a doubt.
This 1959 LP appears to have the legendary mid-year neck carve- not as large as a 58, but fuller than 1960. I am seeing 21.3 mm (.838 in.) at the 1st fret, 23.2 mm (.913 in.) at 12th fret.
Great discussion of the hand-carved necks of that year.
Remarkably, this looks to be one of the very best 59 LP Specials out there in terms of structural integrity from what I have seen as it has ZERO BREAKS OF ANY KIND. The neck heel is very vulnerable on these, I was careful with it, but I did play it a lot and had no problems. the head stock shows no signs of breaks or stress fractures, it stays in tune perfectly and intonation is also extremely good!
I had Keith Holland, one of Northern California’s premiere luthiers, work on this- he installed new modern frets which play MUCH better than the tiny original frets, added strap button on upper horn (way better than original location), and got the neck pickup as low as possible- it's in the perfect spot now! He knows this guitar and verified it is an authentic 1959 with most likely a refinish job at some point. It looked so clean when I first got it, I did actually end up adding a few of the very small dings to it as it was my #1 guitar for a few years. I will miss this, but it's not being played as I switched to PRS Core guitars which just work a bit better for me with the longer scale. I bought this LP to play, and it should be played, it was not made to just sit in a case in a closet for years.
I bought this after inheriting money- I had heard the difference between vintage and newer guitars a few times and just thought it would be great to actually own something made from old growth wood.. the old growth wood is ABSOLUTELY better sounding- the resonance of this guitar is stunning, you can definitely feel it with every strum. The low end is so deep and also clear, the hallmark of old growth vs. younger woods IMO. The wood stock this guitar is made of is the same that the 59 bursts used! it's that unbelievable, you will be amazed. PRS himself copied one of these 59 LP Specials when he made his first guitar and a great builder at Gryphon strings in Palo Alto did the same after working on my guitar! He measured mine and made a near perfect copy... This is a beautiful piece of mahogany, total guitar weight is only 6.6 lbs.!
Ships in a used but very tough SKB case.
The small cosmetic dings on the body are visible in the photos, they are basically minor, the overall impression of this guitar is that it is super clean! The original 1960 bridge p90 cover and screws are the most dinged up and cosmetically challenged part of this guitar, but functioning and position is perfect.
LMK if you have questions, I look forward to having someone else get this gem and play it!
