A tested and working TASCAM 42B Record/Play extender card.
A specialized troubleshooting tool designed for the vintage TASCAM 42B open reel tape recorders. It is not a functional component of the deck itself, but rather an accessory used by technicians to facilitate repairs.
The primary purpose of the extender card is to allow a technician to service the main record/play circuit board while the deck is powered on and running. The 42B reel-to-reel uses plug-in circuit cards which slot vertically into the chassis.
- Troubleshooting Access: The extender card plugs into the chassis slot, and the actual record/play circuit board then plugs into the top of the extender card.
- Testing: This elevates the circuit board outside of the machine's body, providing physical access to the components, test points, and relays (such as K001 on the play head card) for testing with multimeters and oscilloscopes while the machine is operating.
- Diagnosis: Technicians can exercise functions like "Repro" and "Sync" and monitor the circuit in real-time to diagnose issues such as recording failure or bad relays.
These extender cards are an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) accessory that are long out of production and are generally only found on the used market or from specialist vintage audio repair suppliers.
