Gibson / 1961 Southern Jumbo

The Southern Jumbo was introduced in 1942 as a premium model of the Gibson J-45, which also featured round shoulders.

It wasn't until 1955, 13 years after its introduction, that the standard specifications like this one became available.

—The Final Year of the Round Shoulder Model

This guitar features round shoulders like the J-45, and its top is made of spruce.
Minor weathering and scratches from years of play give it a vintage feel.

Since the transition to square shoulders began in 1962, this guitar is a rare example from the final period of the round shoulder model.

The back and sides are made of mahogany, and it features a black back strip not found on the J-45.
This guitar also features weather-checked detailing throughout, giving it a dignified appearance.

The fingerboard is crafted from rosewood and features double parallelogram inlays, a detail unique to high-end models.
The sides of the fingerboard are also bound.
There is some peeling in the binding on the 6th-string side between the 3rd and 5th frets, but this does not significantly affect playability, so you can continue using it with confidence.

The mahogany neck has a thin neck profile for a comfortable grip.
A strap pin has been added to the neck heel.

The rosewood upper belly bridge is set with short saddles.
While adjustable saddles became standard on the J-45 in 1960, the Southern Jumbo's slotted saddles suggest that the guitarist was seeking a vibrant sound that resonated throughout the entire body.

The headstock features the Gibson modern logo and a crown inlay.
While some guitars feature a two-piece bell-shaped truss rod cover, this guitar features a single-piece.

The tuning machines are KLUSON DELUXE single-line.
Another notable feature is the use of independent tuners, unlike the triple-tuner setup found on the J-45.

In addition to its overall dignified appearance, this guitar is packed with unique charms, including decorations that differ from the J-45.
