Hamer (USA) Phantom Custom 1997 - Cherry Red

This is a 1997 Hamer USA Phantom Custom, built during Hamer's period of highest craft when the company first moved to Connecticut. The Phantom evolved from the Hamer Prototype, Hamer's first original design, designed in conjunction with Andy Summers. The Phantom Custom has a thick maple cap over a mahogany body. Neck is mahogany with a Pau Ferro fingerboard. Tuners are locking Schallers. There is little to no fret wear. The triple coil pickup is actually a Duncan JB next to a DiMarzio design single coil (built by Duncan). Neck pickup is another of the DiMarzio designed single coils. The guitar has a 5 position selector knob that can select each pickup individually, as well as both single coils together, or both bridge pickups together (the positions are the same as the positions of a Strat switch). The design idea was to create a guitar that could do everything live, humbucker bridge, single coil bridge, single coil neck, two single coil quack tone, and the added combination of the two bridge pickups, which is actually a great sound.

This one has this insane maple cap and the mahogany back has quite a bit of figure, just incredible woods. The condition is just shy of excellent. There aren't really any dings, but there is a little bit of shallow scratching next to the bridge from adjusting the bridge height. Also, there is some Hameritis at the base of the back of the neck and along a short section of the fingerboard close to the body. Hameritis is a common condition in Hamers where the finish layer separates slightly from the wood, changing the apparent color.

This is a beautifully built guitar, built with the finest materials, at the highest level of craft. It's what US Hamers were all about.
