Vintage Tone Monster: 1970s Yamaha FG-401W – Pure Japanese Golden-Era Magic with Gibson Swag!
Step back into the glory days of acoustic guitars with this stunning classic late 70's or 1980's Yamaha FG-401W, straight out of Japan’s legendary “Orange Label” era when Yamaha was building some of the most beloved workhorse acoustics on the planet. This isn’t just another old guitar—this is the one that players from coffeehouses to campfires swore by for decades.
- Rich, bold dreadnought voice that roars when you dig in and sings sweetly when you play soft
- Solid spruce top with warm, aged patina that only 50 years of careful playing can give
- Laminated rosewood back and sides delivering that classic Yamaha punch, clarity, and projection
- Smooth mahogany neck with the perfect ‘70s C-profile—feels like it was made for your hand
- Rosewood fretboard and bridge in excellent shape, ebony-like darkness and buttery playability
Condition? Very good and 100% player-friendly. Yes, she’s got honest battle scars—a handful of tiny dings and light surface scratches that tell the story of a life well-played (check the photos, they add serious mojo). No cracks, no repairs, no issues—just pure vintage vibe. The top has that gorgeous golden spruce glow, and the back/sides still pop with rosewood figure.
And here’s the best part: this FG-401W has just been professionally set up and dialed in by a master luthier. Action is low and buzz-free, neck is straight as an arrow, fresh phosphor bronze strings, intonation spot-on, and it plays like an absolute dream from the cowboy chords to the top of the neck. Strat to strum and you’ll swear it’s ready for the stage tonight.
If you’ve been chasing that big, warm, cannon-like Yamaha tone that defined the ‘70s folk boom—this is it. These early Nippon Gakki Orange Labels are getting harder and harder to find in playable, set-up-and-ready condition.
Grab a piece of history that still outperforms most new guitars twice the price.
1970s Yamaha FG-401W – she’s old-school cool, sounds massive, and is begging for your fingers.
Don’t sleep on this one. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

- All frets are dressed, leveled, crowned (if needed), and all frets on all guitars are polished to shine like new with no divots.
Return Policy, Restocking Fees & No Tire-Kicking Policy
We follow Reverb’s 7-day return policy. However:
- You must notify us in writing within 3 days of delivery (per tracking) of your intent to return.
- Original shipping and return shipping costs are not refunded unless the guitar is damaged in transit or is significantly not as described.
- A 15% restocking fee applies to all returns for any reason other than damage in transit or significantly not as described.
We record demo videos of every guitar before shipping to document exact condition and performance. Additional photos, measurements, or in-hand descriptions are available upon request prior to purchase.
Minor adjustments and tweaks to a set up (for example to correct a slight buzz or truss-rod tweak) are normal after shipping due to carrier mishandling the package, climate & atmospheric changes, especially when moving from South Florida to colder or less humid environments. These slight issues do not constitute “significantly not as described.” Guitars must be returned in the exact same condition as received/advertised or additional repair/restocking fees will apply.
We are a small business, not a big-chain retailer. We invest significant time and effort into every guitar. This is a NO TIRE-KICKING shop. There is no post purchase haggling or partial refunds. If minor cosmetic marks, tiny imperfections, or the possibility of a post-shipping setup tweak makes you uncomfortable, please do not buy. Plenty of large retailers offer free trials and can absorb shipping costs—we do not.
