Dimensions: 24" l., 12" w., 6" h.
Our version of the enlarged form of the so-called "thumb piano" is modeled on the kongoma of Sierra Leone. It features 8 metal keys mounted on a rectangular wooden box resonator.
Similar forms of the instrument also occur under various names elsewhere in West Africa -- including bongo and gongoma (Senegal), agidigbo (Nigeria), and prempensua (Ghana) -- as well in parts of the Caribbean, where it is known variously as marimbula and marimbola (Cuba and the Dominican Republic, respectively), manimba and manouba (Haiti), Mento box and Rhumba box (Jamaica), and bass box (Trinidad and Tobago).
