Danelectro Mod 6 HSS Made in Korea Rare an in even more rare white 2000ish era
Super rare model especially when in white. It’s all original an almost never comes up for sale. I am the original owner and have had it 25 years. It plays and sounds great. Has a second switch that puts you in the blow position which turns on all the pickups at the same time. Nice neck figuring on the maple neck with some cool mineral streaks too.
Danelectro Mod 6 HSS Overview
The Danelectro Mod 6 (specified as HSS for its pickup config) is a standout from the brand's short-lived "Mod" series, blending vintage-inspired aesthetics with innovative switching for modern versatility. It's one of Danelectro's few original designs post-1960s (not a direct reissue of their 1950s classics), making it a bit of a cult favorite among players who dig quirky, tone-loaded guitars. Produced exclusively in Korea during the late '90s/early 2000s revival under Evets Corp. (D'Addario's music division), these are praised for superior build quality over later Chinese models—thicker woods, better hardware, and that authentic "twang" without fragility. The serial (10003519) fits the era's sticker-style numbering (often 8 digits, batch-coded but not precisely datable; the "10" prefix suggests an early-2000s run, aligning with 2000–2002 production).
Key Specifications
Here's a quick spec breakdown based on factory details:
| Feature | Details |
|------------------|---------|
| **Body** | Semi-hollow or semi-solid poplar/Masonite construction with vinyl binding; offset single-cutaway "Mod" shape (asymmetrical, shark-fin horn for easy upper-fret access); short scale (24.75"). Finishes like White Pearl, Black Sparkle, Coral Green, or custom bursts—yours sounds like a cream/blue edged variant from the photos. |
| **Neck** | Bolt-on hard maple with rosewood fretboard (21 medium-jumbo frets, dot inlays); slim C-profile for fast play; "bottle" headstock with overlay. |
| **Pickups** | HSS configuration: Two single-coil lipstick-tube (Alnico magnets for jangly, bright tone) in neck/middle positions; humbucker (often a lipstick-style stacked humbucker) at bridge for drive and power. Output: ~8k neck/middle, ~12k bridge. |
| **Controls** | Stacked concentric volume/tone knobs (one inner/outer per pickup for space-saving); 6-position "Select-O-Matic" rotary switch (positions: neck only, neck+middle parallel, neck+bridge, middle only, middle+bridge, bridge only); coil-tap push-pull on volume for single-coil humbucker split; "Blow Switch" toggle (adds all pickups in series for fat, high-output "blowout" mode—great for leads or overdrive). Total: 11+ tone variations. |
| **Hardware** | Gotoh tuners (sealed, stable); adjustable rosewood bridge with metal saddles; chrome hardware; body-mounted output jack. |
| **Weight/Other**| typically 6–7 lbs (lightweight, resonant); truss rod at headstock; gig bag included originally. |
This setup gives "endless tonal possibilities," from Strat-like quack (middle position) to Les Paul growl (bridge humbucker) with Danelectro's signature snap—ideal for surf, indie, rockabilly, or experimental stuff.
History & Production
- **Background**: Launched around 1998–1999 as part of Danelectro's post-revival push into original designs. Unlike the U2/DC reissues copying 1950s models, the Mod 6 was a fresh take: "60's tone-a-delic" vibe meets '90s modularity. It targeted players wanting vintage looks (lipstick pickups, offset body) but with expanded switching to rival pricier guitars like a Super Strat.
- **Korean Era (1998–2002)**: Made in Incheon, Korea, during the "first-gen" reissue boom. These were higher-end prices with premium touches like real Gotoh parts and adjustable bridges—far better than the budget Chinese runs post-2002 (which shifted to plastic tuners and simplified electronics). Production ended ~2002 when Evets pivoted; only a few thousand made, so it's somewhat rare today.
- **Serial Notes**: Korean reissues like this one use non-decodable stickers (often in the control cavity or neck pocket). No week/year codes like vintage U.S. models (e.g., "1234" for week 12, 1954). this number (10003519) confirms ~2000–2001 based on batch patterns.
Sound, Playability & Notable Users
- **Tone Profile**: The lipstick singles deliver that classic Danelectro jangle (think early Elvis or Link Wray twang), while the bridge humbucker adds chunk for rock/metal. The Select-O-Matic shines for quick changes—position 3 (neck+bridge) is a sweet quasi-Tele rhythm, and the Blow Switch cranks volume for solos without pedals. Pair it with a Fender amp for sparkle or a Marshall for bite.
- **Playability**: 25” scale makes bends easy (great for beginners or smaller hands); semi-hollow body resonates warmly but stays feedback-resistant. Common tweaks: Swap tuners if yours are loose (Gotohs hold up well), or add Graph Tech nuts for better tuning stability.
