There he is. That magnificent black bastard.
We were somewhere around the third fret when the nitrocellulose began to take hold.
Not many people understand what it takes to build a proper Esquire in this decadent era of plastic finishes and sterile factory lines. Let's face it, Fender's quality control isn't what it used to be. This isn't some weekend warrior's parts-bin Frankenstein—this is 3 pounds and 15 ounces of premium pine tone wood wrapped in an aged nitro heavy relic black finish that looks like it survived a three-week bender through every dive bar from Bakersfield to Brooklyn...
The body. Jesus, the body. Lightweight pine distressed to perfection—not by some ham-fisted relic department automaton, but with the kind of authentic wear that suggests real roadhouse violence (artisanal finish checking to prove it).
Think Brad Paisley's Road Worn Esquire ($1729) met Fender's Custom Shop 1960 Telecaster Custom Heavy Relic ($5225) in a dark alley, and this black beauty is what crawled out the other side. Every ding tells a lie. Every scratch is a fabricated memory of gigs that never happened. It's beautiful in the way that only something properly destroyed can be.
The neck is a genuine Fender Vintera Mod '60s Telecaster roasted maple with a C-profile 9.5" radius—the kind of neck that feels like it was carved specifically for your hand by some benevolent wood wizard who actually gave a damn. Roasted maple. They actually cook this wood. The result? Stability, resonance, and a playing surface smoother than a casino hustler's pitch. This black beauty is setup the same as the original 1950 pine Fender Esquire but with a more 'modern' neck profile. Imagine, it's like Springsteen's main squeeze, but in reverse.
THE SONIC WEAPON
Up top: one Lindy Fralin High Output Bridge pickup with custom black string wrap. That's it. That's all you get. And friend, that's all you need. Fralin doesn't mess around—this isn't some anemic vintage-correct noodle tone. This is a hot-rodded monster that'll cut through a mix like a chainsaw through birthday cake. The Esquire configuration was good enough for Leo, and it's good enough for you. One pickup. Celestial tone. No excuses. Pure, unfiltered electrical violence.
THE HARDWARE
Hipshot Grip-Lock Vintage Inline Staggered Closed tuners (8.5mm, satin finish). These aren't your grandfather's tuning pegs. These are precision, German engineering that lock down with the kind of authority that makes Floyd Rose users weep into their whammy bars. Staggered posts. You could tune this thing in a hurricane. End of story. ...I'm looking at you G string!
The bridge is a cut-down-sides aged relic 3-saddle compensated affair—the classic Tele ashtray design but with the sides trimmed for those of us who actually palm-mute like civilized human beings. Three brass saddles. Compensated intonation. The way Leo intended before the marketing department got their greasy mitts involved.
Control plate? Aged relic. String ferrules? '60s Tele relic nickel. Neck plate, string guide, strap buttons? All Fender Road Worn series—properly aged to match the apocalyptic vibe of the body. Even the pick guard screws are Road Worn, because consistency isn't just a virtue, it's a goddamn religion when you're building something this committed to the aesthetic.
The Cream 3-ply (C/B/C) pickguard is a proper Esquire but with an 8-hole configuration. Not the flappy original Esquire 5-hole or some 11-hole Tele abortion. Eight holes. Modern spec. This matters to exactly three people on earth, and if you're reading this far, you're one of them.
THE GUTS
The wiring harness is a 920D Custom Esquire Eldred 3-way setup (.047 Orange Drop Capacitor; 3300 pF Ceramic Capacitor; Pure Tone Output Jack). For the uninitiated: this gives you the classic Esquire tones but updated for this century—First position 'bridge' setting is straight to the amp through the volume control only, with the tone control bypassed for a hotter, louder lead sound with extra highs; 'middle' position is through the volume and tone controls...sounds a little warmer than position #1 (i.e., normal Tele bridge pickup). Toggle to the 3rd position creates a scooped and hollow midrange that sounds nice and warm with a "cocked wah" sound, by again bypassing the tone control and running through an Orange Drop capacitor + volume control. It's a variation on the original hot-rod wiring scheme from the early '50s, before Fender decided everyone needed two pickups and got soft.
Tele black 3/8" brass input jack. Because even the jack needs to look the part. 1/4" solid shaft relic dome knobs. Not plastic. Not cheap. Metal dome knobs that feel substantial under your sweaty fingers at 2 AM when the club owner is giving you the wrap-it-up signal and you've got one more song in you.
By the way, it's quiet as a mousey when you aren't ripping. Fully copper shielded pickup and wiring cavities. Bonus feature: Paisley has the Seymour Duncan Secret Agent under the guard. You could too. There is a neck pickup slot under the pickguard, just wire one in and swap the skin if the Fralin ever gets lonely. But it won't...so forget I even mentioned it.
THE VERDICT
Total fighting weight: 6 pounds 14ish ounces. Light enough to play a four-hour set without seeking Workers' Comp, heavy enough to swing at a drunk critic if the situation demands it.
This is not a guitar for the timid. This is not a guitar for people who need "versatility" or "tonal options" or any of that modern comfort-food nonsense. This is a one-pickup, pine-bodied, nitro-finished, hot-rodded Esquire that looks like it's been to hell and sounds like it's leading the return trip.
It's a weapon. A tool. A statement. A middle finger to seven decades of incremental improvements and market research focus groups. American Professional Classic Christmas Series blah blah blah...Nope.
The American Dream, rendered in aged hardware and roasted maple.
What were we talking about?
To be clear this is a custom built guitar.
No returns. No regrets. No neck pickup.
Make offer. Serious inquiries only. Bring money.
