This was an updated version of the original PH-1. It had an additonal “Resonance” knob (feedback control) to increase the tonal variations. This is a 4 stage phaser like the PH-1 and its biggest competitor at the time, the MXR Phase 90. It can create an wide array of different tones.

VERSION DIFFERENCES

There are at least 2 cosmetically different PH-1Rs. On the earlierst versions the P in PH-1R was located under the s in Phaser. Later the font was slightly changed and the P was then found under the e i Phaser.

BOSS POCKET DICTIONARY VOL.2 (1985):

The PH-1R has all of the features of the clean, low noise PH-1 plus a Resonance control for added depth of phase. A Rate control provides more sweep speed variance than any other phase shifter now available – from 100msec to 16 seconds – while the Depth control, permits notch depth adjustment, adjusts the phasing intensity and tailors the PH-1R to whatever instrument is being used, resulting in more precise control over virtually any creative application. A deeper-sounding phase effect can be achieved be rerouting the previously phased signal back through the circuit by means of the Resonance control. This control is adjustable over a wide range in order to permit maximum creative control.

USING THE PH-1R

The PH-1R is effective for playing soft, melodic solo phrases

The PH-1R can also be used to play a legato backing in shallow phase or to play arpeggio in deep phase.

By combining the PH-1R with the DS-1 Distortion unit, an aggressive machine-like sound can be produced.

When adding rotary speaker effects to a keyboard sound, set the Rate control to a higher speed and set both the Depth and Resonance controls at relatively low levels

Fig 1 shows the setting used to create a normal phaser sound. (Fig 1. Rate 4, Res 6, Depth 6)

Fig.2 shows the setting used to create Lee Ritenour’s favorite monotone backing. (Set the Rate control to the lowest speed level and turn the Depth control fully clockwise.) (Fig 1. Rate 2, Res 6, Depth 10)
